Kader defies deportation and takes sanctuary in Montreal

Abdelkader Belaouni ("Kader" to his friends) is a refugee from Algeria who came to Montreal via the USA. Kader, who is blind, remains in sanctuary inside the Saint-Gabriel's Catholic Church in Point St-Charles, after defying an order to be depor
ted on January 5, 2006. A member of the Action Committee of Non-Status Algerians and Solidarity Across Borders, Kader participated actively in the "No One Is Illegal March on Ottawa" -- a one-week walk to Ottawa from Montreal to demand "status for all!" this past June 2005.
